The Union County Resource Recovery Facility, operating as Covanta Union, Inc., is located on the banks of the Rahway River and began commercial operation in June 1994, serving the residents of Union County, New Jersey. The facility processes approximately 1,500 tons of solid waste each day into enough electrical energy to power some 30,000 homes and businesses. The facility runs entirely on the energy it produces, with the remaining 39 megawatts of renewable energy sold through a merchant power marketer. Designed and built by Covanta, the facility is owned by the Union County Utilities Authority and operated by Covanta under a long-term lease agreement.

Covanta  Energy Guided Facility Tour Checklist

Before you arrive:

Please dress properly for your Covanta Energy facility tour. On the day of your tour, please wear:

  • Long sleeves (can be a shirt, blouse or a jacket)
  • Long, ankle length pants and socks
  • Flat heel shoes or work boots

Do not wear the following on a tour: sandals, open toe, high-heel, or stiletto footwear.

All visitors will be required to wear protective glasses, a hard hat and hearing protection provided by the facility.

Note: Although many areas on our tour route can be accessed using elevators, if you or someone in your party has special needs please call the facility in advance of your tour for further information.

After you arrive:

After you arrive at one of our facilities, please make sure your tour guide provides the following safety gear and instruction before you begin your guided tour:

  • Hard hat
  • Protective glasses
  • Reflective vest
  • Ear protection
  • Visitor tour video and safety briefing

Covanta Energy facilities are industrial facilities and it is important to stay with your tour guide at all times. Never wander away on your own. Always be safe and enjoy your tour.
