ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Harclerode is an environmental sustainability scientist and veteran project manager. She has 12 years of experience on a diverse variety of environmental projects, including climate change vulnerability assessments and adaptation plans, environmental sustainability projects, and environmental remediation assignments. As a Task and Project Manager, she is experienced in designing and managing environmental projects with multi-disciplined teams. Dr. Harclerode has provided technical support on numerous environmental projects for federal, state, and private clients.
Dr. Harclerode also serves as CDM Smith’s Sustainable Remediation Technical Specialist, providing support on environmental footprint analyses, life cycle assessments, community impact evaluations, stakeholder engagement techniques, and sustainability best management practice evaluations. Dr. Harclerode’s research specializes in the development and application of integrated assessment approaches to comprehensively define sustainability objectives and evaluate environmental, social, and economic impacts of project activities. She is an Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure EnvisionTM Sustainability Professional.
ABOUT THE TOPIC
The international remediation community has made substantial progress in developing guidance and tools to evaluate sustainable attributes of remediation activities. The state of the practice has transformed from being focused on environmental footprint evaluations, such as quantifying chemical emissions and natural resource consumption, to incorporating social and economic impacts beyond the site boundary. The presentation starts with a brief overview of the history of sustainable remediation guidance development, followed by condensed case studies showcasing implementation of best management practices and evaluation tools, such as the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) SiteWiseTM program and life cycle assessment.
The presentation will present innovative approaches developed for more comprehensive evaluation of environmental, social, and economic impacts of remediation activities. Innovative approaches include integration of societal cost benefit analysis to evaluate local and regional socio-economic impacts, and integration of social science methodologies to identify and consider stakeholder values. In closing, future research needs will be briefly discussed.
